How to Check SASSA Balance For R350

This guide will walk you through four different ways to check your balance for the SASSA SRD (Social Relief of Distress) grant, also known as the R350 grant.

Whether you’re comfortable using your phone, the internet or prefer visiting an office in person, there’s a method that works for you.

Important Note: These methods work for checking the balance of the R350 grant and other grants provided by SASSA.

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • Your South African ID number (ID book or green ID card)
  • Your cellphone number used during the SASSA application

Here are the four methods to check your balance:

Method 1: Checking your balance using your cellphone (USSD method)

  1. Open your phone’s dial pad and enter the following code: *120*69277#.
  2. Press the call button.
  3. You’ll receive prompts on your screen. Follow these instructions carefully.
  4. You’ll be asked to enter your ID number and phone number. Make sure these details match what you provided during your SASSA application.
  5. Once you enter your information, you’ll receive an SMS notification with your current SASSA balance.

If the first USSD code doesn’t work (shows busy or unavailable), try the alternative code:

  1. Open your phone’s dial pad and enter the following code: *120*3210#.
  2. Press the call button.
  3. Follow the prompts on your screen and enter your ID number and phone number when requested.
  4. You’ll receive an SMS notification with your current SASSA balance.

Method 2: Checking your balance online using WhatsApp

  1. Save the SASSA WhatsApp number (+27 82 046 8553) to your phone’s contacts.
  2. Open WhatsApp and chat with the saved SASSA contact.
  3. Type “SASSA” in the chat window and send it.
  4. You’ll receive a response from SASSA. Reply with “Status” to this message.
  5. SASSA will send another message. If you have a reference number for your application, reply with “Yes”. Otherwise, reply with “No”.
  6. If you answered “Yes” in step 5, enter the mobile number associated with your SASSA grant in the next reply.
  7. In the following reply, send your reference number.
  8. SASSA will then send you a message with your current SASSA status and balance report.

Method 3: Checking your balance at an ATM (for SASSA cardholders only)

  1. Insert your SASSA card into the ATM and enter your 4-digit PIN code.
  2. Look for the option on the screen that displays your account balance. This might be labelled “Account Balance,” “Balance Inquiry,” or something similar (it can vary depending on the ATM).
  3. You’ll usually be given two choices: view your balance on screen or print a receipt. Choose the option you prefer.
  4. Your account balance will be displayed on the screen or printed on a receipt, depending on your choice.

Method 4: Visiting your nearest SASSA office or Post Office

  1. Gather the following documents:
    • Your identity document (ID book, passport, or driver’s license)
    • Your SASSA application ID (if you have it)
  2. Visit your nearest SASSA office or Post Office.
  3. Wait in line for your turn to speak with a SASSA representative.
  4. When it’s your turn, inform the representative that you want to check your SASSA balance.
  5. Provide your identity documents for verification.
  6. Once verified, the representative will provide you with details about your application and your current SASSA balance.

We recommend using the cellphone methods (USSD or WhatsApp) whenever possible. These options are generally the quickest and most convenient ways to check your balance, saving you time and avoiding potential queues at SASSA offices.
